Jim Milliken opened his independent consultancy in Project Management, Communication Skills and related topics/services in late 1986, after a career as newspaper writer/editor/manager that had begun in 1959.

Jim Milliken works as an independent, occasionally participating in ad-hoc partnerships with other consultants and organizations. His base of operations is in Portland, and his current service area is New England, although he occasionally delivers services elsewhere in the United States and in Canada.

EDITOR, New Hampshire Times
May-November 1986
Was brought on board on a project basis to take statewide weekly newspaper of 15,000 circulation into Total Market Coverage system of 306,000 circulation, adding staff, news sections and related elements. Accomplished in five months a project originally expected to take a year. The newspaper suspended publication a month after launch of the new design, for reasons unrelated to the news operation.

MANAGING EDITOR, The Nashua Telegraph
September 1982-May 1986
Reorganized newsroom procedures to overcome chronic deadline problems, managed large special edition projects, handled staff training and problem solving; performed staff management and desk functions, backed up the Editor.

September 1981-February 1982
Traveled among group of small weekly newspapers in Maine and New Hampshire, working on productivity/quality issues and handling duties of editor and general manager as necessary.

Was Managing Editor or City Editor, and held other professional positions at daily newspapers of 20,000 to 120,000 circulation in New York, Michigan, Ohio and Maine. Headed a project attempting to establish a statewide weekly newspaper in Maine.

Design and manage classroom and online courses in Communication, Project Management and related topics. Is a certrified Master Reviewer of online college courses for Quality Matters.

Since 1970, has held part-time college and night-school teaching positions in subjects such as newswriting and press release writing; advertising, salesmanship, communication and leadership/management.

Presented a full-credit undergraduate course in Advertising/Promotion at the University of New Hampshire for 15 years, and a similar course in Personal Selling there for five years.
